Thiourea resins

In comparison with urea-based resins, thiourea resins are slower curing and the products are somewhat more brittle. They are more water-repellent the U-F resins.

Urea and thiourea resins can be identified by taking a few milligrams of the sample, adding 1 drop of hot concentrated hydrochloric acid (about 110 °C), and heating until dry. After cooling, add 1 drop of phenylhydrazine and heat the sample for 5 min in an oil bath at 195 °C. Cool it and add 3 drops of dilute ammonia (1 1 by volume) and 5 drops of a 10% aqueous nickel sulfate solution. On shaking with chloroform, the solution becomes red to violet indicating the presence of urea or thiourea.
