Four biocides [2-(thiocyanomethylthio)benzothiazole (TCMTBT), methylene bisthiocyanate (MBT), formaldehyde, and a mixture of 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl4-isothiazolin-3-one (CMIT-l-MIT)] were tested. With multiples of biocide levels tested vs. planktonics, only formaldehyde was effective in completely eliminating sessile bacteria at the concentrations and exposure times used. Sessile bacterial levels of about 10 to 10 /cm were reduced to undetectable viability. Exposure time to biocides was found to be a key variable in biocide effectiveness vs. sessiles.
