Think strategy

If we are to use those bullet points to our advantage we must think strategy before we start. When we were making benzene compounds we usually started with a preformed simple benzene derivative— toluene, phenol, aniline—and added side chains by electrophilic substitution. In this chapter our strategy will usually be to build the heterocyclic ring with most of its substituents already in place and add just a few others, perhaps by electrophilic substitution, but mostly by nucleophilic substitution. [Pg.1185]

The application of the strategies in system selection can be illustrated by using a simple example. Let us think about an industrial hail with some internal heat sources but without any remarkable internal movement that would disturb the stratification. [Pg.638]

Much of the new thinking on strategy has centered on advanced technology and the exploitation of the computer, but the following recommendations, requiring minimum investment in new plant, should be considered first ... [Pg.67]

Several approaches to enantioselective synthesis have been taken, but the most efficient are those that use chiral catalysts to temporarily hold a substrate molecule in an unsymmetrical environment—exactly the same strategy that nature uses when catalyzing reactions with chiral enzymes. While in that unsymmetrical environment, the substrate may be more open to reaction on one side than on another, leading to an excess of one enantiomeric product over another. As an analog)7, think about picking up a coffee mug in your... [Pg.734]

With these words, E. J. Corey defines for us the concept of retro-synthetic analysis for which he received the Nobel Prize in chemistry in 1990. Nowadays, it has become routine to think about a target molecule in terms of its retrosynthetic analysis. Furthermore, it is hard to imagine how chemists developed synthetic strategies prior to the formulation of these concepts in the 1960s, without thinking, at least subconsciously, in these terms about complex organic structures. [Pg.14]

The recent development of the convertible oxide materials at Fuji Photo Film Co. will surely cause much more attention to be given to alternative lithium alloy negative electrode materials in the near future from both scientific and technological standpoints. This work has shown that it may pay not only to consider different known materials, but also to think about various strategies that might be used to form attractive materials in situ inside the electrochemical cell. [Pg.379]

It is also interesting to examine the actual regression coefficients that each calibration produces. Recall that we get one row in the calibration matrix, K, for each component that is predicted. Each row contains one coefficient for each wavelength. Thus, we can conveniently plot each row of as if it were a spectrum. Figure 21 contains a set of such plots for each component for Klu, and K2 . We can think of these as plots of the "strategy" of the calibration... [Pg.61]
