In an analysis of this problem Kaye and Naylor [5] suggest that several containers should be selected in order to obtain a representative sample. These may be selected systematically, i.e. the 100th, 200th, 300th and so on or, preferably, using a table of random numbers. These containers should be examined individually in order to determine whether the variation between containers is at an acceptable level and combined to determine an average. In either case it is necessary to obtain a representative sample from each container. For this purpose Kaye and Naylor recommend a thief sampler but warn that this may easily give a biased sample. [Pg.11]

In practical blending processes, one cannot obtain arbitrary quantities of pristine data as one can using particle-dynamic simulations, and one must settle for sampling a static bed, as mentioned previously. In such a case, it is especially important to understand sampling limitations and systematic biases. A common means of obtaining samples in a tumbler is by the use of a scoop or thief sampler. These samplers are inserted into the bed and extract samples from its... [Pg.2362]

This practice covers the procedure for obtaining representative samples of hollow microspheres of the type used for syntactic foam buoyancy materials. Hie procedure consists of procuring representative samples by the use of "spike" or "thief samplers which can be inserted all the way to the bottom of the container, thus sampling the entire vertical distance. [Pg.420]

A bottom-sampling device, such as the Thief Sampler, can be used to obtain samples from the bottom of the fuel tank. This device has a clear thermoplastic tube with a bottom foot valve, which is operated from the top by a knob connected to the foot valve by a stainless steel control rod that runs the length of the device. Graduations on the tube exterior enable the operator to record where microbial contamination is found and the fuel tank level (Melton et al., 1988). [Pg.196]

Figure 1.4. Several devices are available for taking a small representative sample from a large supply of powder [31, 32, 34]. a) A thief sampler consists of two concentric cylinders, b) The spinning riffler can efficiently produce small, representative samples. Physical Sampling Methods. The behaviors of two popular types of thief samplers are shown in Figures 15-4 and 15-5 (Muzzio et al., 1999). In Figure 15-4a we illustrate the bed disturbances that occur when using a side-sampling thief. This device consists of a tube with a slot in its side that can be... [Pg.891]

Cijrrosion study samples are used extensively in developmental systems and consist of carefully prepared and examined metal or graphite pieces which are included in the system piping during fabrication and removed after each experimental run. Samples have also been inserted into flowing streams through thief-sampler airlocks to study corrosion effects and interactions between the sample and fuel stream components. [Pg.857]
