Because the temperature ranges and conditions of a system can vary, a variety of materials have been incorporated into different types of thermometers. The following is a list of common thermometer types and the property measured in each to obtain a heat measurement. [Pg.147]

Liquid-in-glass thermometers require a finite amount of time to achieve a final, equilibrium temperature. The time required can vary for individual thermometer types depending on the diameter of the thermometer, the size and volume of the bulb, the heat conductivity of the material into which the thermometer is placed, and the circulation rate of that material. [Pg.158]

Platinum resistance thermometers are currently used by the NIST for calibration verification of other thermometer types for the temperature range 13.8 to 904 K. In addition, they are one of the easiest types of thermometers to interface with a computer for data input. On the other hand, platinum resistance thermometers are very expensive, extremely sensitive to physical changes and shock, have a slow response time, and therefore can take a long time to equilibrate to a given temperature. There are problems to be considered and avoided when using Hquid-in-glass thermometers. One type of these is pressure errors. The change in height of the mercury column is a function of the volume of the bulb compared to the volume of the capillary. An external pressure (positive or negative) which tends to alter the bulb volume causes an error of indication, which may be small for normal barometric pressure variations but large when, for example, using the thermometer in an autoclave or pressure vessel. [Pg.405]

Liquid-in-glass thermometers measure the thermal expansion of a liquid, which is placed in a solid container, on a length scale. The mercury thermometer is one example of liquid thermometers. Alcohol is also used with this type of instrument. The temperature range is -80 to a-330 °C depending on the liquid. The quality, stability, and accuracy vary considerably. The advantages are a simple construction and low price. A disadvantage is that they are not compatible for connection to monitoring systems. [Pg.1137]

A psychrometer measures the dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperatures simultaneously. The measurement of the wet-bulb temperature is achieved by means of a wet wick placed over the thermometer bulb. The thermometer can be practically of any type. A cylindrically shaped sensor is preferred. The wet-bulb temperaturesensing element, covered with the wick, and the dry-bulb temperature sensor, are placed in the airstream to be measured. There are two types of devices subject to calibration those that are adjustable and those that are not. An adjustable device is one where the scale or the mechanism is capable of adjustment (e.g. micrometer, voltmeter, load cell).
