Even when thermally stable, such molecules may behave as soft with respect to adsorption. Thermal stability and hardness, in fact, are not synonymous compared with alkanes, proteins have a lower thermal stability but a higher hardness. Protein hardness (which is manifested in the constancy of protein shape - a key functional factor) is imparted to proteins by a lot of thermally labile hydrogen bonds. Heating is not the unique way to destroy hardness. As discussed in the previous section, electrostatic interactions cleave the shape-preserving secondary bonds. Sufficiently large molecules with few intrachain hydrogen bonds may be soft because of the possibility to assume a lot of tautomeric configurations. That the adsorbates too may be soft impact severely the determination of surface areas. [Pg.263]

The 3//-azepines obtained by cycloaddition of azirines to cyclopentadienones (see Section 3.1.1.1.2.) are thought to arise from the initially formed 2/7-azepines by [1,5]-H suprafacial sigmatropic shifts.31-108 In contrast, 1/Z-azepine 9 results from the thermal rearrangement of the nonisolable 2//-azepine-2-carboxylate 8.13 Presumably, the 1 //-azepine is stabilized, relative to the 3//-isomer, by intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the NH and the adjacent ester group. [Pg.173]

Thermogravimetric data indicate that the structure of a polymer affects stability in a neutral environment (HI). A polymer such as Teflon, with carbon-carbon bonds which are (by comparison) easily broken, and with strong carbon-fluorine bonds, is quite stable thermally. However, polyethylene, also with carbon-carbon bonds but containing carbon-hydrogen bonds which are broken relatively easily in comparison with the carbon-fluorine bond, is less stable than Teflon. In turn, polyethylene is more stable than polypropylene. This difference in stability is probably caused by tertiary carbon-hydrogen bonds in polypropylene. Polypropylene is more stable than polyisobutylene or polystyrene, which decompose principally by unzipping mechanism. [Pg.39]

More recently, Stepanov et al. (1989) investigated the acid-base properties of the zwitterion 3.22 which is obtained in the diazotization of 5-amino-3-nitro-l,2,4-triazole. Under alkaline conditions the (Z)-diazoate dianion 3.23 is formed. It can be isomerized thermally to give the (E)-diazoate dianion 3.24. If the solution of this compound is acidified, the primary addition of a proton takes place at the anionic ring nitrogen yielding 3.25, and subsequently the hydrogen-bond-stabilized (Z)-iso-mer (3.26). Complexes. The structure of an n a charge-transfer complex between quinoxaline and two iodine atoms has been obtained by X-ray analysis and its thermal stability compared with those of related complexes. The hydrogen bond complex between quinoxaline and phenol has been studied by infrared spectroscopy and compared with many similar complexes. Adducts of quinoxaline with uranium salts and with a variety of copper(II) alkano-ates have been prepared, characterized, and studied with respect to IR spectra or magnetic properties, respectively. [Pg.94]

Esters of a-diazoalkylphosphonic acids (95) show considerable thermal stability but react with acids, dienophiles, and triphenylphosphine to give the expected products. With olefinic compounds in the presence of copper they give cyclopropane derivatives (96), but with no such compounds present vinylphosphonic esters are formed by 1,2-hydrogen shift, or, when this route is not available, products such as (97) or (98) are formed, resulting from insertion of a carbenoid intermediate into C—C or C—H bonds. Instead of metal chelation, an intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the oxygen atom of phenolate and a hydrogen atom of a carboxylic acid in the 8-position leads to stabilization of the colored form, such as compound 12.20,21 This spiropyran exhibits reversed photochromism, which means that thermally stable species change from the spiro form to the colored form, and thus the colorless form produced by photoirradiation soon converts to thermally stable colored form. [Pg.18]
