USE IN ASTHMA Theophylline now is relegated to a far less prominent role primarily because of the modest benefits it affords, its narrow therapeutic window, and the required monitoring of drug levels. Nocturnal asthma can be improved with slow-release theophylline preparations, but other interventions such as inhaled glucocorticoids or salmeterol probably are more effective.
