The Short Periods

The first, second and third periods are short periods. There are two elements in the first period and eight elements in both the second and the third periods. The elements in the short periods constitute almost 97% of the earth s crust, oceans and atmosphere. Among these elements, helium (He) and neon (Ne) gases occur only in trace amounts in the atmosphere but argon (Ar) makes up about 1 % of the atmsophere. The other elements are abundant. 

There are eight elements in this period. Nitrogen and oxygen and fluorine occur as diatomic molecules in the atmosphere, such as N2, 02, and F2. The gas neon exists in a monoatomic structure. After helium and hydrogen, Neon, has the lowest freezing point. Carbon (C) is basic element of the organic chemistry. 

The elements in the third period also have one s and three p orbitals in their valence shells.
