The Facts about Water Filtration

It can be difficult to find alkaline water from traditional sources, let alone water that will have a significant alkalizing effect on our body. And yet alkaline water gives us tremendous health benefits. Remember how much water is required to neutralize the acidity from one glass of cola No one can drink that much water, so the alternative is to create water that is more alkaline than the liquid found in our taps or bottles. It is important to do your homework to find the best option for your water needs. Many water filtration and/or purification systems combine different filter technologies to eliminate or reduce pollutants. Here are some of the more common types 1 [Pg.179]

Activated carbon A pound of carbon has a surface area of 125 acres and can absorb thousands of different contaminants. It is particularly effective on bad tastes and odors, chlorine, radon, most sediment, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), but has little ability to alkalize water. Activated carbon filtration systems are available in many forms, including under-the-counter and counter-top options and units that fit inside pitchers and even in personal water bottles. [Pg.179]

KDF-55 This filtration option is a copper—zinc formula that relies on a chemical process called oxidation/reduction (redox) to remove pollutants from the water. It is effective on bad tastes and odors, heavy metals, chlorine, hydrogen sulfide, and iron but has little ability to alkalize water. [Pg.180]

Reverse osmosis This hyper-filtration method uses both pre-filters (such as activated carbon) and membranes with unbelievably small pores to trap contaminants. As such, it is effective for bacteria and viruses, arsenic, fluoride, nitrates, and most of the substances identified above. It is moderately effective on VOCs and hydrogen sulfide and ineffective on radon. [Pg.180]
