Rhenium occupies a very important place in the development of the chemistry of complexes containing metal metal double, triple and quadruple bonds. This chemistry involves coordination complexes that contain pairs or trinuclear clusters of rhenium atoms and has been surveyed in a recent monograph entitled Multiple Bonds Between Metal Atoms .5 This source, which covers the literature up to early 1981, has also been invaluable in preparing the present review and can be consulted for a more complete and detailed coverage of these classes of complexes. 

THE CHEMISTRY OF COMPLEXES CONTAINING 2,2 -BIPYRIDYL, 1,10-PHENANTHROLINE, OR 2,2, 6, 2"-TERPYRIDYL AS LIGANDS... 

Several diatomic ligands similar to CO are worth brief mention. Two of these, CS (thio-carbonyl) and CSe (selenocarbonyl), are of interest in part for purposes of comparison with CO. In most cases, synthesis of CS and CSe complexes is somewhat more difficult than for analogous CO complexes, because CS and CSe do not exist as stable, free molecules and do not, therefore, provide a ready ligand source.Therefore, the comparatively small number of such complexes should not be viewed as an indication of their stability. Thiocarbonyl complexes are also of interest as possible intermediates in certain sulfur transfer reactions in the removal of sulfur from natural fuels. In recent years, the chemistry of complexes containing these ligands has developed more rapidly as avenues for their synthesis have been devised. 

The chemistry of complexes containing dppm or related bifunctional ligands has flourished over the last 15 years. A number of articles reviewing this area have appeared (41-44), and a report describing the development of tripalladium and triplatinum systems bridged by dppm ligands has been published recently (45). We concentrate on diplatinum species here.

The chemistry of complexes containing cationic iridium has been studied by Merola and co-workers. Among all the complexes described in the literature, they reported the complex cis,mer-(Me3P)3IrH2Cl, whose aqueous chemistry looks very rich [25]. It resulted from the oxidative addition of H2 to [Ir(cod)(PMe3)3]Cl [26], From XH and 31P NMR measurements, they showed that two different species are formed upon dissolution in water. One species is the cationic aquo complex [mer,cis-(Me3P)3IrH2(OH2)] 17 and the other one is the dinudear cation 18 (Scheme 5).
