The matrix compartment is characterized by cholinergic and somatostatin-containing neurons. Anatomically, corticostriatal and thalamostriatal projections are closely associated with the striatal matrix, while projections from limbic structures, such as the hippocampus and the amygdala, primarily innervate striatal patches.
