For complex III, the Na+ Is probably as accessible to solva-tlon by solvent molecules as is the Na In the tight Fl-,Na+ Ion pair. Hence, no externally bound solvent molecules need to be removed. This may be different In other systems. For example, the formation constant of a loose Ion pair complex between FI", Na+ and tetraglyme (tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether) Is nearly four times lower In dloxane than In THF (10). This may be caused by specific solvent effects rather than by the difference In solvent dielectric constant. The flexible glyme ligand wraps Itself around the Na+ Ion, and this may make It more difficult for solvent molecules to remain bound to Na+ In the glyme-separated Ion pair. [Pg.82]

To a solution of 5 (853 mg, 4.2 mmol) in tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether was added anhyd KF (318 mg, 5.3 mmol, dried under high vacuum at 250CC for 24 h) under N2 and the mixture was allowed to stir at rt for 18 h. Pure product 6 was isolated by vacuum transfer to a — 196 C U-trap colorless liquid yield 260 mg (66%). [Pg.554]

Sodium borohydride (99%, powder) is used as received. Ammonium sulfate (anhydrous, 99 + %) is used without further purification 1 however, it is very important that it is ground to a very fine powder. Tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether (tetraglyme, 2,5,8,ll,14-pentaoxapentadecane)(99%) must be vacuum distilled (110-120°C, < 100 //Torr) from molten sodium before use. [Pg.233]

Hydroxymethylation of carbonyl compounds.3 Alkyl chloromethyl ethers react in the presence of Sml2 (2 equiv.) with ketones in THF to give adducts in 50-80% yield. The reaction with aldehydes is conducted in tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether, which suppresses pinacol reduction. Hydroxymethylation of carbonyl compounds can be effected by use of benzyl chloromethyl ether followed by hydrogenolysis of the adduct. [Pg.430]

Tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether is the solvent for the preparation. Practical-grade material is purified before use by allowing approximately 2 kg. to remain overnight in contact with about 20 g. of fresh lithium tetrahydroaluminate in a properly vented vessel at 80°. Then it is distilled from lithium tetrahydroaluminate under reduced pressure (b.p. 110° at 0.75 mm.) and kept dry until used. (The checkers note that the solvent can be dried by heating with sodium as an alternate to the somewhat more hazardous tetrahydroaluminate.)... [Pg.60]

Iodine-activated magnesium - is used to initiate the reaction of magnesium and methyl chloride. About 0.5 g. of magnesium turnings and 0.1 g. of iodine are placed in a 10-ml. test tube and covered with about 2 ml. of anhydrous ethyl ether. After the reaction has proceeded for about 5 minutes, the excess liquid is decanted, and the test tube is heated carefully with a free flame to a dull redness. The test tube is allowed to cool somewhat. While it is still warm, about 5 ml. of tetraethylene glycol dimethyl ether, previously saturated with methyl chloride, is added. Additional gentle warming may be required if the reaction does not start immediately. [Pg.60]
