Lithium tetrahydroaluminate,

Presence of carbon dioxide in solutions of the hydride in dimethyl or bis(2-methoxy-ethyl) ether can cause a violent decomposition on warming the residue from evaporation. Presence of aluminium chloride tends to increase the vigour of decomposition to explosion. Lithium tetrahydroaluminate may behave similarly, but is generally more stable. [Pg.47]

Addition of nitromethane to ethereal lithium tetrahydroaluminate solution at ambient temperature gave an explosively violent rection [1], and this was confirmed when addition of 0.5 ml of dry nitromethane to 10 ml of reducant solution led, after 30 s, to a violent explosion which pulverised the flask [2]. The violence of the explosion suggests that lithium ad-nitromethanide (or possibly lithium fulminate) may have been involved. [Pg.186]

Of a series of lithium hydrocuprates Li CuH +i (n = 1-5), only the title compound (when solvated with THF) appeared a more powerful reducant than lithium tetrahydroaluminate. Safety precautions similar to those adopted for the complex aluminium hydride seem appropriate. [Pg.1498]

Tetrahydrofuran is distilled before use, in a nitrogen atmosphere, from lithium tetrahydroaluminate. A 1-1. threenecked flask equipped with a mechanical stirrer, reflux condenser,... [Pg.106]

The use of lithium tetrahydroaluminate for drying ethers can lead to explosions. It is essential that the distillation not be continued to a point where the volume of remaining solvent is low. The distillation must be effected in an inert atmosphere (nitrogen or argon). [Pg.106]

The iron(II) chloride7 is prepared from 1.5 g. (0.0268 mol) of iron powder (hydrogen-reduced, 100-mesh), 6.0 g. (0.370 mol) of anhydrous sublimed iron(III) chloride (Matheson, Coleman and Bell, reagent-grade), and 150 ml. of tetrahydrofuran (THF) freshly distilled under nitrogen from lithium tetrahydroaluminate or preferably calcium hydride. [Pg.112]

The required working time is 3 to 4 hours. All equipment is thoroughly dried prior to use and is flushed with an inert gas (argon or nitrogen). Commercial sodium hydroborate is used without purification. The dimethyl ether of diethylene glycol (diglyme) is refluxed over calcium hydride for 8 hours and subsequently distilled over lithium tetrahydroaluminate (lithium aluminum hydride). Commercial tri-n-butylamine is refluxed with acetic anhydride and distilled at atmospheric pressure. [Pg.142]
