Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were detected as ubiquitous contaminations. Since PCBs are used in a wide field of applications they are not suitable as specific anthropogenic markers. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are well known persistent pollutants ubiquitously distributed in the aquatic environment (Takada and Eganhouse, 1998). Therefore, PCBs as well as their industrial substitutes tetrachlorobenzyltoluenes (TCBT, commercial product Ugilec 141) were both formerly identified in the Lippe river sediments (Kronimus et al. 2004, Poppe et al., 1991 LUA, 2000).
