Templated mesoporous materials

Many studies that have focused on the formation mechanism of various types of templated mesoporous materials have been summarized in a number of recent reviews,46 9 and it is still an ongoing topic of research.50 51 Here, we want to recapitulate only very briefly the useful interaction classification scheme between the surfactants (S) and the inorganic species (I), which was suggested by Huo et al.52,53...

The syntheses of a large number of templated, mesoporous materials other than silica have also been reported. These materials are mainly of interest to catalysis and hence will be described only briefly here. A good summary of their synthesis routes and factors involved in the syntheses has been given by Ruckenstein and co-worker (Ruckenstein and Chao, 2001 Chao and Ruckenstein, 2002a and 2002b). Metals/elements such as Al, B, Ti, Zr, V, Pd, and Mn can be introduced by either grafting or isomorphous substitution onto the framework... 

In general, the procedures used for the preparation of mesoporous materials are similar to those utilized in the synthesis of zeolites except that a surfactant instead of an inorganic cation or base is used as the template. Mesoporous materials (e.g., mesoporous silica) are prepared under room temperature or mild hydrothermal conditions (typically below 150°C) in the presence of anionic, cationic, or neutral surfactants, in either basic or acidic conditions. 

MCF and SBA-15 were the first reported templated mesoporous materials to sequester and release proteins, taking advantage of size exclusion and ion exchange simultaneously [12]. More recently it has been shown that MCF mataials have high immobilised enzyme capacities and activities compared to other templated mesoporous materials such as SBA-15 and MCM-41 [13]. In both Aese examples the MCF materials used were functionalised with APTES in a solvent phase reaction. In this study we report on the use of APTES in a solvent phase reaction and APDMES in a vapom phase reaction to functionalise large pore MCF...
