Tellurium imides

The discovery of cyclic imides of the heavier chalcogens is a relatively recent development. The ring systems that have been structurally characterized all have bulky substituents attached to the nitrogen atoms, viz., Se3(NR)2 (74, R= Bu, Ad),30,152 Se3(N Bu)3 (75),160 Se Bu (76)208 and Se9(N Bu)6 (77).208 The only known cyclic tellurium imide is Te3(NtBu)3.150... 

Diaryl tellurium oxides reacted with trifluoroacetamide3, trichloroacetamide1, phenylme-thanesulfonamide4, and arenesulfonamides1 in refluxing chloroform to produce diaryl tellurium imides. 

Diaryl tellurium imides react with thiols4, thiobenzamide4, thiourea5, and N,N -diphenylthiourea4 to produce diaryl telluriums and amides. 

Equimolar mixtures of diaryl tellurium imides and 5,5-dimethyl-l,3-dioxocyclohexane at 20° formed diaryl 4,4-dimethyl-2,6-dioxo-cyclohexylidene tellurium3. 

Alkyl phenyl telluriums react with AT-chloro-A-sodio-4-methylbenzenesulfonamide in refluxing THF to yield terminal olefins from prim, alkyl groups and a mixture of 1 -alkenes and 2-alkenes from sec. alkyl groups. Diorgano tellurium imides were postulated as intermediates. Considering the synthesis of the alkyl phenyl tellurium from an alkyl halide and benzenetellurolate, the overall reaction is the conversion of an alkyl halide to an olefin. Starting with lithiomethyl phenyl tellurium and an alkyl halide, the resulting olefin will have one carbon atom more than the alkyl halide. ... 

Tellurium imides comprise another class of tellurium-nitrogen compounds of recent interest.Diorgan-otellurium imides RRTeNR" can formally be considered to contain a Te=N double bond, but the Te-N distance generally falls between the single and double bond lengths.
