Cyclic imide

The application of antibiotics as chiral selectors has resulted in the successful resolution of almost all types of neutral, acidic, and basic racemic molecule. These antibiotics have been used for the enantiomeric resolution of amino acids, their derivatives, peptides, alcohols, and other pharmaceuticals. The selectivities of the most commonly used antibiotic-based (vancomycin, teicoplanin, and ristocetin A) CSPs varied from one racemate to another and are given in Table 1. Vancomycin was used for the chiral resolution of amino acids, amines, amides, imides, cyclic amines, amino alcohols, hydantoins, barbiturates, oxazolidinones, acids, profens, and other pharmaceuticals. Teicoplanin was found to be excellent chiral selector for the enantiomeric resolution of amino acids, amino alcohols, imides, peptides, hydantoins, a-hydroxy and halo acids, and oxazolidinones, whereas ristocetin A is capable of chiral resolution of amino acids, imides, amino... 

Selective reduction of cyclic imides. Cyclic imides are reduced quantitatively to n-carbinollactams by sodium borohydride in an acidic medium. Regio-selectivity has been observed in reduction of succinimides (equation 1). The reduction also appears to be stereospecific only one stereoisomer is obtained when the two alkyl groups at C2 arc different.

Imides are diacyl derivatives of ammonia or primary amines. The reaction is similar in its scope and mechanism to the acetylation of aniline or 1,4-phenylene-diamine presented in Experiments [23A] and [23B], As illustrated in the present experiment, cyclic anhydrides produce cyclic imides. Cyclic anhydrides are prepared in Experiments [25A] and [25B], Derivatives of imides have been suggested for use in the treatment of arthritis, tuberculosis, and epilepsy. Several also have been found to be growth stimulants. Imide-based polymers are used in many applications, including fire-resistant woven fabrics. The N-phenyl-maleimide prepared in this experiment is also a good dienophile in the Diels-Alder reaction (see Experiments [14] and [15]), and in fact has been used as a reagent to characterize 1,3 dienes.
