Some of the red sunsets painted by Van Gogh have likewise faded to grey because he used a synthetic alizarin. We know that his The Oise at Auvers (Tate Gallery, London) originally had a pink sky because this is still the colour on the canvas that had been protected from light by the frame of the picture. 

Painter and engraver in wood, prominent member of the Vorticist movement. Attended Munich University and the Slade Art School. Attached to the Dazzle Painting Section from March 1917 as Lieutenant RNVR. Executed some of the decorations for the liner Queen Mary in 1936. His work is exhibited at the Tate Gallery and the Imperial War Museum.

Odlyhal also used DSC to study samples from three paints during treatment in the Conservation Department of the Tate Gallery. Knowledge of the t3 e of paint media used is of interest both to the conservator who needs to select die appropriate material for cleaning and to the art historian...
