Tartaric acid classification

These results complete the chemistry of the tartaric acid through elements of periodic classification. If adducts between phosphorus and tartaric acid have been lastly discovered, they offer, in return, a larger co-ordination variety than emetics which exhibit exclusively tetraco-ordination. It is interesting to notice that real phosphorus emetic, spirophosphoranide anion, is rather unstable in contrast with the arsenic or antimony homo-logues, while pentaco-ordinated or sixco-ordinated compounds, which are stable, are unknown for these metalloids.

Following the classification described in Table 8.1, other precursor materials, such as metal nitrates or metal acetates combined with complexing and polymerizing agents such as citric acid, ethanolamines, tartaric add and ethyleneglycol, are frequently used in more recently reported studies. 

The classification of A.Tenenbaum makes it easy to understand how even some acids with pKa > 3 such as (tartaric, mandehc, salicylic and of course phenol) may not be appropriate in the hands of novice peelers.
