Target Assemblies

Irradiation. Nickel metal disks, 2.5 cm in diameter by 0.16 cm thick, were used as targets for the production of Fe-52. Five disks were sandwiched with aluminum spacers and placed into a copper ring. This target assembly was placed in a target carrier and exposed to 800-MeV protons for approximately 17 hours (4-6) The target was returned to the hot cell facilities for processing...

Another potential variation in the thermal flux, i.e. local perturbations, is assumed to be negligible because of the relatively small quantities of transplutonium elements contained in an individual target assembly. 

Qualification of Targets for Irradiation A second application of the model is the prediction of fission rates (and hence heat fluxes) for targets being transferred to the reactor for irradiation. The allowable heat fluxes (14) were selected to prevent melting of aluminum at the center line of the target assembly and must not be exceeded at any time during the proposed irradiation of the targets. 

Micelles are short-lived, ill-defined assemblies (see chapter 3) of 50-100 amphiphilic molecules in water. They can be target assemblies of synkineses if they answer a well-defined purpose. For example, one may design a system in which only two different molecules form a heterodimer within each micelle. In this case, the micelle could be a very simple SDS-micelle, but the components of the dimer must be carefully fitted to the micelle s size and lifetime. Synkinesis would concentrate on the structure of the dimer components rather than the micelle. Micelles may also be used in an irreversible light-induced charge... 

The great diversity of concepts and synkinetic structures which have been realized within the last decade and which is partly represented in this volume, suggests that all kinds of membranes are accessible asymmetric, as thin as 2.0 nm, helical, porous, fluid or solid, chiral on the surface or in the centre, photoreactive etc. etc. This diversity will inevitably grow. A few obvious unsolved problems which need immediate attention can also be detailed e.g. synkinesis of solid micelles and vesicles from concave molecules with at least four hydrogen bonding sites, co-crystallization of porphyrins with solid membrane structures, and evaluation of nanopores as catalytic sites. Many more such target assemblies will undoubtedly be envisioned and successfully syn-kinetized.

Typical target assemblies of synkinesis are noncovalent dimers, charge-transfer complexes, hetero-dimers and -trimers, cyclic or helical oligomers, inherently asymmetrical or helical membranes in the form of vesicles, spheres, tubules, and rods, as well as macroscopic surface monolayers. Pores and domains in vesicle membranes and gaps of molecular size in surface monolayers are other synkinetic targets. They may function as receptors or reactive, enzyme-like surface clefts (Fendler, 1982 Fuhrhop 1982 Israelaehvili, 1992 Fuhrhop and Koning). 

As Groves drafted the directive the metallurgists at Los Alamos finished casting the rings of U235 that fitted together to form the gun bomb s target assembly, the last components needed to complete Little Boy. 

Strategy and delivery intersected on July 26 and synchronized. The Indianapolis arrived at Tinian. Three Air Transport Command C-54 cargo planes departed Kirtland Air Force Base with the three separate pieces of the Little Boy target assembly two more ATC C-54 s departed with Fat Man s initiator and plutonium core. Meanwhile Truman s staff released the Potsdam Declaration to the press at 7 p.m. for dispatch from Occupied Germany at 9 20. It offered on behalf of the President of the United States, the President of Nationalist China and the Prime Minister of Great Britain to give Japan an opportunity to end this war ... 

The incommensurate symmetry interaction approach dissects a target assembly into its symmetry elements and considers the necessary geometric relationships among these elements. For example, a tetrahedral assembly contains four C3 and six C2 axes (Figure 2). These incommensurate symmetry axes must be simultaneously satisfied to form a tetrahedral structure. A PGAA instrument consists of a source of neutrons, a collimating beam tube to shape and direct a beam of neutrons onto a sample, a shutter to turn the beam on and off, a target assembly to position the sample reproducibly in the neutron beam, a gamma-ray detector, a beam stop to absorb the neutrons that are not absorbed by the sample, and shielding to protect the detector and personnel from neutron and gamma radiation. Each of these components will be considered in turn. The construction of a recent system illustrates clearly many of the choices involved (Robinson et al. 2009). More detailed information on the issues can be obtained in the PGAA Handbook (Molnar 2004).
