Tanker Oil Spills Number Analysis

Since 1970, over 1800 oil tanker spills, greater than 7 tons per spill, have occurred around the globe [42]. Tables 6.1 and 6.2 present the annual breakdowns of these spills under three categories 7-700 tons spills, greater than 700 tons spills, total No. of spills of 7 tons and above for the periods 1970-1989 and 1990-2013, respectively [42]. 

Data presented in Tables 6.1 and 6.2 indicate that oil spills greater than 700 tons have decreased significantly over the period of 44 years. For example, for the period 1970-1979, the average number of such spills was 24.5 spills per year and for the period 2000-2009, the number was 3.5 spills per year. 

Furthermore, 54% of these spills occurred during the period 1970-1979 and for the decade 2000-2009, this percentage decreased to 8%.
