In liquid-filled thermal systems, mercury or various organic fills are used. In vapor-filled systems, a number of hydrocarbons, including ethane, ethyl chloride, ethyl ether, chlorobenzene, and propane, among others, are used. Two very different kinds of pump fluids have been employed in diffusion pumps. For many years, mercuiy diffusion pumps, were used in small laboratory-bench glass vacuum systems.
