Syntheses, chemical candidates

Synthetic Herbicides. Most commercial phytotoxins (herbicides) have been discovered through random screening programs, followed by derivative synthesis and activity studies when a potential chemical candidate Is discovered. Seldom has a bloratlonal approach for herbicide discovery been achieved or used. Over the past 4S-50 years, perhaps close to a million compounds have been screened for herbicldal activity. The number of compounds screened has continually Increased and estimates for the 1980 s suggest that 12 to 15 thousand compounds per year were synthesized and screened for each compound reaching the market (28). In the 1990 s, the ratio may Increase 5-fo1d. [Pg.7]

The syndiesis of nanomaterials is being pursued via a number of methods. Physical mediods include sonication and ball milling of solids ((f). Chemical techniques include vqwr condensation methods (7-P), micellular synthesis, chemical reduction (//), sonochemical syndiesis (/O), and the sol-gel methodology (12-20). For nanomaterials to have a notewordiy impact in the area of energetic materials processes for dieir syndiesis must satisfy significant production specifications such as cost, health and safety, and reproducibility. The sol-gel mediod provides another iqqnoach to nanomaterials syndiesis for energetic nanoconqiosites and, in some reflects, it is a more suitable candidate method than those Ascribed previously. [Pg.200]

Polyimides (PI) were among the eadiest candidates in the field of thermally stable polymers. In addition to high temperature property retention, these materials also exhibit chemical resistance and relative ease of synthesis and use. This has led to numerous innovations in the chemistry of synthesis and cure mechanisms, stmcture variations, and ultimately products and appHcations. Polyimides (qv) are available as films, fibers, enamels or varnishes, adhesives, matrix resins for composites, and mol ding powders. They are used in numerous commercial and military aircraft as stmctural composites, eg, over a ton of polyimide film is presently used on the NASA shuttle orbiter. Work continues on these materials, including the more recent electronic apphcations. [Pg.530]

Development of conjugate and peptide vaccines requires the typical organic synthesis process and purification. This is a new area for vaccine technologists. Again, the main concern is to maintain the immunogenicity of the vaccine candidate during the chemical reaction and purification steps. [Pg.361]

Until the second half of the twentieth century, the structure of a substance—a newly discovered natural product, for example—was determined using information obtained from chemical reactions. This information included the identification of functional groups by chemical tests, along with the results of experiments in which the substance was broken down into smaller, more readily identifiable fragments. Typical of this approach is the demonstration of the presence of a double bond in an alkene by catalytic hydrogenation and subsequent determination of its location by ozonolysis. After-considering all the available chemical evidence, the chemist proposed a candidate structure (or structures) consistent with the observations. Proof of structure was provided either by converting the substance to some already known compound or by an independent synthesis. [Pg.519]

It is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of various chemicals as a low-boiling solvent for gums, resins, NC, etc it is also considered a candidate for use in fuel-air munitions Refs 1) Beil 17,6, (4) [12] 2) H. Moureu... [Pg.970]

In the discovery phase, a reaction route is developed to allow synthesis of a maximum number of analogues for pharmacological testing. Since the focus is on synthetic flexibility, issues of scale are not central. Once a lead compound exhibits a useful pharmacological activity and is identified as a candidate for further development, larger scale synthesis is required to evaluate stability, bioavailability, toxicity, physicochemical properties, and other compound properties. The Chemical Development Department is usually involved in the preparation of supplies for these activities. [Pg.173]

Very few chemical experiments resulted in as much publicity as the first synthesis of biomolecules under prebiotic conditions carried out by the doctoral candidate... [Pg.87]
