Switching chiral nematics

Several exciting phenomena described for non-chiral nematic systems were also reported for nanoparticle-doped chiral nematic liquid crystals. We mentioned the work of Kobayashi et al., who, most notably, demonstrated a frequency modulation twisted nematic (FM-TN) mode and fast switching characteristics using metal nanoparticles as dopants [301-307, 313, 314],... [Pg.358]

Chiral disubstituted PEDOTs have recently been prepared for the first time via transetherification of 3,4-dimethoxythiophene monomers with chiral glycols followed by potentiodynamic oxidation.174 An alternative approach to optically active PEDOTs has also been recently described, which involves the electrochemical polymerization of the EDOT monomer in aqueous hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) as a polymer lyotropic liquid crystal to give a chiral PEDOT/HPC hybrid.175 The PEDOT prepared in this chiral nematic liquid crystal exhibited optically active electrochromism in that it could be electrochemically switched between a dark blue reduced state and a sky blue oxidized form that exhibited a different CD spectrum. [Pg.225]

M. Mathews, N. Tamaoki, Planar chiral azobenzenophanes as chiroptic switches for photon mode reversible reflection color control in induced chiral nematic liquid crystals. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 130, 11409-11416 (2008)... [Pg.173]

Fiber optic wave guide switches, and modulators based on ferroelectric liquid crystals with microsecond response [43] and chiral nematics with a 2x2 switch configuration [40], were also demonstrated. [Pg.446]

Fig. 14, then it is found that the number of atoms (n) that the chiral center is removed from the rigid central core determines the handedness of the helical structure of the chiral nematic phase. As the atom count by which the chiral center is removed from the core (n) switches from odd (o) to even (e) (parity), so the handedness of the helix alternates from left to right or vice versa. A further interesting use of the focal-conic to homeotropic texture transition is in infrared modulation [272]. Here it was found possible to modulate infrared light at A=8-12 pm with a maximum transmission of 87%, a contrast of 93%, and turn on and off times of 1 ms and 125 ms, respectively. A further window examined was 3-5 pm, and this work suggests that other chiral nematic electrooptic effects could be exploited in the near infrared. In communications technology a 2x2 optical switch for fiber-optics has been developed [273] using a chiral nematic film and two switchable nematic waveplates. It has been demonstrated that this is suitable for LED or laser sources. The device worked at 1.318 pm and had switching times of 40 ms with -26 dB crosstalk between unselected fibers. There will clearly be further advances in this use of the unique optical properites of chiral nematics. [Pg.1384]

A new free-standing silica-based composite film that exhibits reversible thermochromic reflection, induced by a L.C. guest in the pores of iridescent mesoporous films, has been described. The authors have demonstrated that selective reflection from the novel mesoporous organosilica material with chiral nematic organization can be reversibly switched by thermal cycling of the 8CB guest between its isotropic and L.C. states, which was proven by SS NMR experiments. ... [Pg.484]
