Sustainable microreactor technology

Microreactor technology also offers a contemporary way of conducting chemical reactions in a more sustainable fashion due to the miniaturization and increased safety, and also in a technically improved manner due to intensified process efficiency. This relatively new technology is implemented in novel and improved applications and is getting more and more used in chemical research. 

Microreactor Technology In the last years, some examples of Radziszewski reaction have been reported using microreactor technology, which allows the development of more sustainable methods thanks to the miniaturization and increased safety and efficiency [60, 61]. In particular, the Stevens and the Orru groups developed in cooperation a procedure for the continuous production of highly substituted imidazoles [62, 63]. The present work aims to provide a literature review of the implementation of microreactor technology into the synthesis of ionic liquids, into (bio)catalyzed production of commercially important chemical compounds with ionic hquids as sustainable solvents, as well as in downstream processing with ionic liquids. 

Flow microreactor chemistry is stiU an ongoing challenging field of science and technology. The features of flow microreactor chemistry will hopefully work together to help meet the great demands of chemical synthesis and chemical production for the development of sustainable society in the near future.
