Surface instrumentation

Rotary speed of the positive displacement motor is directly proportional to flowrate. Torque is directly proportional to pressure. Thus, normal surface instruments can be used to monitor the operation of the motor downhole. 

As drilling technology moved the pursuit of hydrocarbon resources into higher-cost offshore and hostile environments, intentionally deviated boreholes required information such as azimuth and inclination that could not be derived by surface instruments. Survey instruments, either lowered on a sand line or dropped into the drill pipe for later retrieval, to some degree satisfied the requirements but consumed expensive rig time and sometimes produced questionable results. 

Electron microscopy56, most commonly employed as scanning electron microscopy (SEM), is now a widely used tool in examining the morphology of surfaces under vacuum conditions, and so in an electrochemical context electrode surfaces and corroded surfaces. Instruments also permit chemical microanalysis to be carried out. 

Developments in surface instrumentation over the past 20 years or so have revealed rich detail about the structure and composition of catalytic surfaces and the relationships of various surface properties to catalytic behavior. The status of our surface catalytic knowledge and the resulting opportunities for catalyst design have been reviewed by Somorjai [4]. 

Regime "D" Finally, after plasma treatment, free radical sites at or near the polymer surface can remain active for extensive periods of time (11). When the treated sample is subsequently exposed to ambient atmosphere, these radicals can chemically react with atmospheric constituents such as oxygen or water vapor. This certainly can occur during the time interval while the sample is transferred through atmosphere from the plasma reactor to the ESCALAB surface instrument. 

Many detectors exhibit a small constant response K known as a dark current, even when no radiation strikes their surfaces. Instruments with detectors that have a significant dark-current response are ordinarily capable of compensation so that the dark current is automatically subtracted. Thus, under ordinary circumstances, we can simplify Equation 25-3 to... 

After each working step the benches have to be cleaned with suitable reagents. It is absolutely necessary that no PCR products be treated in one of these rooms. If contamination has occurred, all surfaces, instruments, and coats must be cleaned, and all chemicals and working solutions must be exchanged. 

Ethanol is mainly used in disinfectants for surfaces, instruments and for the skin, e.g. in hand disinfectants. Sometimes ethanol is applied as a preservative, e.g. in pharmaceutical and cosmetic products, where odourless and non-irritating preservatives are preferred.
