Of these mechanisms, solubilisation and emulsification of soils are controlled by detergent composition, hydrodynamic flow is controlled by washing machine design and fibre flexing is controlled by fabric construction. The textile chemist can only influence the mechanisms that involve the fibre surface, i.e. rollup of oily soil, penetration of soil-fibre interface, surface abrasion and finish swelling. Nylatron ways consist of nylon with a molybdenum disulfide filler. They have a high PV rating and low friction and wear. They should have a surface finish of 32 to 125 microinches Ra. Nylatron ways are good for use in dry applications. They are especially good for use in thermoplastic side-flexing chain comers when no lubrication is used. Fire Retardent Paints. Fire retardant paints are based on chlorinated rubber and chlorinated plasticizers with added SbO. These reduce the rate of spread of flames. Addn of NH4H2PO4, PE, or dicyandiamide produces an intumescent or swelling paint that forms a thick insulating layer over the surface to which it is applied when exposed to flames Fire retardant paints do not control fires and are no substitute for an automatic sprinkler system. They are best used where the only hazard is exposed, combustible, interior finish materials or in isolated buildings where sprinklers will not be installed.
