The virtual transducer can be placed in a specific location on the test object surface, it can be moved along a path (e.g. a robot scanning path generated off-line or a path resulting from a real inspection sequence) or it can be moved along the surface, dynamically updating the ultrasonic sound propagation in the material. [Pg.871]

Femtosecond lasers represent the state-of-the-art in laser teclmology. These lasers can have pulse widths of the order of 100 fm s. This is the same time scale as many processes that occur on surfaces, such as desorption or diffusion. Thus, femtosecond lasers can be used to directly measure surface dynamics tlirough teclmiques such as two-photon photoemission [85]. Femtochemistry occurs when the laser imparts energy over an extremely short time period so as to directly induce a surface chemical reaction [86]. [Pg.312]

The direct dissociation of diatomic molecules is the most well studied process in gas-surface dynamics, the one for which the combination of surface science and molecular beam teclmiques allied to the computation of total energies and detailed and painstaking solution of the molecular dynamics has been most successful. The result is a substantial body of knowledge concerning the importance of the various degrees of freedom (e.g. molecular rotation) to the reaction dynamics, the details of which are contained in a number of review articles [2, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40 and 41]. [Pg.906]

Because of the generality of the symmetry principle that underlies the nonlinear optical spectroscopy of surfaces and interfaces, the approach has found application to a remarkably wide range of material systems. These include not only the conventional case of solid surfaces in ultrahigh vacuum, but also gas/solid, liquid/solid, gas/liquid and liquid/liquid interfaces. The infonnation attainable from the measurements ranges from adsorbate coverage and orientation to interface vibrational and electronic spectroscopy to surface dynamics on the femtosecond time scale. [Pg.1265]

Photoinduced Surface Dynamics of CO Adsorbed on a Platinum Electrode... [Pg.84]

Adsorbed CO on a metal surface is one of the simplest adsorbates and has attracted significant interest within the areas of fundamental surface science, catalysis, and electrochemistry. An understanding of the oxidation mechanism of adsorbed CO is important to design and develop electrocatalysts for fuel cells [69-73] and the surface dynamics of adsorbed CO on electrode surfaces in electrolyte solutions is, therefore, very important. [Pg.84]

TR-SFG seems to be an ideal tool to study the surface dynamics of adsorbed CO at solid/liquid interfaces. Although there are several reports of TR-SFG studies on an electrode, they are only of investigations of vibrational relaxation lifetime by IR excitation [34, 65, 67]. [Pg.84]

According to the characterizations by TEM and XRD, the sample prepared from a CH4/H2 plasma was composed of nanocrystalline diamond and disordered microcrystalline graphite. Then nondiamond carbon was effectively removed with an increase in [CO]. It is therefore concluded that the VDOS of the nanocrystalline diamond and DEC films extracted from the HREELS data is in qualitative agreement with the characterizations of TEM and XRD. Although the HREELS probes only the region near the surface, the agreement suggests that the surface dynamics do not differ dramatically from those of the bulk. [Pg.7]

The observations of complex dynamics associated with electron-stimulated desorption or desorption driven by resonant excitation to repulsive electronic states are not unexpected. Their similarity to the dynamics observed in the visible and near-infrared LID illustrate the need for a closer investigation of the physical relaxation mechanisms of low energy electron/hole pairs in metals. When the time frame for reaction has been compressed to that of the 10 s laser pulse, many thermal processes will not effectively compete with the effects of transient low energy electrons or nonthermal phonons. It is these relaxation channels which might both play an important role in the physical or chemical processes driven by laser irradiation of surfaces, and provide dramatic insight into subtle details of molecule-surface dynamics. [Pg.80]

After discussing specific, basic and experimental aspects of the use of thermal He as a surface probe we will review recent results obtained in the study of surface dynamics and of 2D phase transitions. [Pg.213]
