Surface diffusion exchange mechanism

There is a qualitative distinction between these two types of mass transfer. In the case of vapour phase transport, matter is subtracted from the exposed faces of the particles via dre gas phase at a rate determined by the vapour pressure of the solid, and deposited in the necks. In solid state sintering atoms are removed from the surface and the interior of the particles via the various diffusion vacancy-exchange mechanisms, and the centre-to-cenU e distance of two particles undergoing sintering decreases with time. [Pg.204]

The schlieren experiments employing solutions with THF and dloxane as solvents proved that at least two different coagulation mechanisms exist in an unstirred bath. It is evident that Case B applied for the THF solution, while Case A applied for the dloxane solution. The depletion and removal of the THF from the cast layer Interface via convection flow (rather than diffusive exchange with water molecules) is instantaneous, and the rapid accumulation of the solvent on the surface of the aqueous coagulation bath is notable. As for the dloxane solution (Figure 7), schlieren patterns could not be observed even after 1000 seconds - even when phase... [Pg.275]

The simple hopping mechanism, however, is not the only possible way for atoms to move on Cu(100). Figure 6.11 illustrates another possible diffusion process known as an exchange mechanism. In this mechanism, the adatom (shown in dark grey), replaces an atom that is initially a surface atom (shown in light grey) while the surface atom pops up onto the surface,... [Pg.150]

It is clearly recognized that on oxide semiconductors various types of chemisorption can and do occur as a result of various types of electron exchange between adsorbent and adsorbate. Slow rates of adsorption may be due to the conditions of this exchange. The logarithmic rate law, however, seems to represent a number of different processes (bulk or surface diffusion, activation or deactivation of catalytic surfaces, chemisorption). It appears futile to explain this empirical relation in terms of a unique mechanism. [Pg.72]

The slope is indicative of the type of release mechanism. A slope of 0.5 indicates a diffusion-controlled release a slope of 1.0 indicates that a corrosion-related mechanism is operable. The diffusion release mechanism is characterized by surface adsorption, ion exchange, and migration. Chemical corrosion, or alteration of the silicate lattice, is characterized by hydroxyl attack on silicon or by hydrogen attack on bridging oxygens. [Pg.86]

Intra- and intermolecular hydrogen transfer processes are important in a wide variety of chemical processes, ranging from free radical reactions (which make up the foundation of radiation chemistry) and tautomeriza-tion in the ground and excited states (a fundamental photochemical process) to bulk and surface diffusion (critical for heterogeneous catalytic processes). The exchange reaction H2 + H has always been the preeminent model for testing basic concepts of chemical dynamics theory because it is amenable to carrying out exact three-dimensional fully quantum mechanical calculations. This reaction is now studied in low-temperature solids as well. [Pg.152]

In fixed-bed operation, in addition to the two-step mass transport mechanism, advection and dispersion play key roles in ion exchange. These factors must be considered. As influent concentration is assumed low, solution velocity can be considered constant. If pore diffusion is an important factor in the ion uptake, the following equations can be used. Similar expressions for surface diffusion can be obtained ... [Pg.278]

Por single file diffusion mechanism, it is assumed that no coimter-exchange is possible between the adsorbed solutes i and j. For single file diffusion mechanism the Pick surface diffusivity matrix is given by ... [Pg.766]

Because of the widespread interest in growth of material systems by deposition, the subject of surface diffusion is one of enormous current interest. The example of surface diffusion being taken up here is of interest to our overall mission for several different reasons. First, as noted above, surfaces are one of the most important sites of communication between a given material and the rest of the world. Whether we interest ourselves in oxidation and corrosion, catalysis, the crystal surface is the seat of tremendous activity, most of which is mediated by diffusion. A second reason that we have deemed it important to consider the role of surface diffusion is that our analysis will reveal the dangers that attend the use of transition state theory. In particular, we will appeal to the existence of exchange mechanisms for diffusion that reveal that the diffusion pathways adopted on some crystal surfaces are quite different than those that might be suggested by intuition. [Pg.589]
