Chemical Manufacturing. Chemical manufacturing accounts for over 50% of all U.S. caustic soda demand. It is used primarily for pH control, neutralization, off-gas scmbbing, and as a catalyst. About 50% of the total demand in this category, or approximately 25% of overall U.S. consumption, is used in the manufacture of organic intermediates, polymers, and end products. The majority of caustic soda required here is for the production of propylene oxide, polycarbonate resin, epoxies, synthetic fibers, and surface-active agents (6). 

Other oxazolines synthesized from alkanolamines ate useful as surface-active agents and corrosion inhibitors. Synthetic oxazoline waxes promote lubricity and mat resistance of coatings. 

Many modifications of MacConkey s medium exist one employs a synthetic surface-active agent in place of bile salts.

To increase the usefulness of bioremediation as an effective field remedial tool, significant investments have been made towards the development of means to remove sorbed PAHs, attack sources of NAPL, and subsequently increase the aqueous solubility/bioavailability, and thus the biodegradability, of targeted compounds. To date, one of the most effective ways to accomplish these tasks involves the use of surface active agents (i.e., surfactants). A variety of synthetic surfactants have been shown effective in increasing the bioavailability of PAHs and other hydrophobic contaminants (Kile Chiou, 1989, 1990 Edwards et al., 1991 Liu et al., 1991). Although the solubilization process is not completely understood, these studies showed that a variety of ionic and nonionic surfactants could significantly increase the water solubility of monitored chemicals. 

Additional uses for higher olefins include the production of epoxides for subsequent conversion into surface-active agents, alkylation of benzene to produce drag-flow reducers, alkylation of phenol to produce antioxidants, oligomerization to produce synthetic waxes (qv), and the production of linear mercaptans for use in agricultural chemicals and polymer stabilizers. Aluminum alkyls can be produced from heavy olefin streams and olefin or paraffin streams have been sulfaled or sulfonated and used in the leather (qv) industry. 

Synthetic detergents (syndets) belong to the group of surface active agents [which are substances which affect (usually reduce) surface tension when dissolved in water or in water solns] and have structurally unsymmetrical molecules contg both hydrophilic, or water-soluble, groups and hydrophobic, or oil-soluble hydrocarbon chains... 

We worked with a variety of synthetic silicates and their modifications by various physical or chemical treatments or by various chemical additives. We particularly evaluated many synthetic hydrated calcium silicates, with and without additional treatments. These treatments included various organic and inorganic acid compounds, organic surface-active agents, and inorganic salts. We also studied samples dried to remove free moisture and/or some water of hydration. The modifications were selected to effect favorably the properties of the carriers. 

CNC Product ST is an anionic surface active agent which possesses excellent wetting and scouring properties. CNC Product ST is recommended as a print wash in cases where high concentrations of residual color and print paste are to be removed from cotton, rayon or synthetic fibers.
