Supramolecular Complexes of Polymers Bearing Cyclodextrin Moieties with Guest Molecules 

Polymers bearing CD moieties have been synthesized by cross-linking of CDs using epichlorohydrin [69, 70], by coupling reaction between modified or native CDs and polymers [71-75], and by homo- and copolymerization of monomers bearing CD moieties [76-78]. 

Weickenmeier and Wenz [84] investigated the inclusion complex formation of poly[(N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone)-co-(maleic acid)] modified with j8-CD moieties with 1-adamantanamine and with 1-adamantanecarboxylic acid by isothermal titration calorimetry. They reported 1 1 inclusion complexes between -CD moieties and adamantane derivatives with relatively large binding constants (ca. 3-5 x 10 M ). 

Amiel et al. [85, 86] investigated the formation of ternary complexes of a water soluble epichlorohydrin-linked f-CD polymer, cationic surfactant dodecyltrimethy-lammonium bromide (DTAB), and a polyanion sodium salt dextran sulfate (NaDxS) by viscometry and small angle neutron scattering. They proposed a structure of polyion complexes between NaDxS and the supramolecular polycation formed from fi-CD polymer and DTAB. More recently, Amiel et al. [87] have characterized in detail the supramolecular polycation. 

Yashima et al. [88] investigated the interaction of poly(phenylacetylene) modified with fi-CD moieties with guest molecules, including 1-adamantanol, (-)-borneol, and R)- and (S)-l-phenylethylamine. They observed a color change upon complex-ation because of a change in the helicity pitch arising from helicity inversion.
