There are many dangers in ignoring SCM as a discipline. The most serious is the loss of profitable customers. The hypothetical supply chain in Figure 2.1 illustrates the physical movement of products through a traditional network. The flow begins with several suppliers. They send raw material to a factory. Other material that requires no conversion goes directly to warehouses that support customers. The factory outbound shipments supply a distribution center or regional warehouses. The distribution center and warehouses support customer demand. [Pg.18]

The GT-MHR direct Brayton cycle (gas turbine) power conversion system contains a gas turbine, an electric generator, and gas compressors located on a common, 29 m long vertically orientated shaft supported by magnetic bearings. The power conversion system also includes recuperator, pre-cooler and intercooler heat exchangers. Heated helium flows directly from the MHR into a gas turbine to drive the generator and gas compressors. Fig. XV-2. From... [Pg.454]

Polymers are attracting much attention as functional materials to construct photochemical solar energy conversion systems. Polymers and molecular assemblies are of great value for a conversion system to realize the necessary one-directional electron flow. Colloids of polymer supported metal and polynuclear metal complex are especially effective as catalysts for water photolysis. Fixation and reduction of N2 or C02 are also attractive in solar energy utilization, although they were not described in this article. If the reduction products such as alcohols, hydrocarbons, and ammonia are to be used as fuels, water should be the electron source for the economical reduction. This is why water photolysis has to be studied first. [Pg.44]

A special case arises when the "skin" (membrane) layer of a normal composite membrane element is immobilized with a catalyst and not intended for separating reaction species. Consider the example of an enzyme, invertase, for the reaction of sucrose inversion. Enzyme is immobilized within a two<layer alumina membrane element by filtering an invertase solution from the porous support side. After enzyme immobilization, the sucrose solution is pumped to the skin or the support side of the membrane element in a crossflow fashion. By the action of an applied pressure difference across the element, the sucrose solution is forced to flow through the composite porous structure. Nakajima et al. [1988] found that the permeate direction of the sucrose solution has pronounced effects on the reaction rate and the degree of conversion. Higher reaction rates and conversions occur when the sucrose solution is supplied from the skin side. The effect on the reaction rate is consistently shown in Figure 11.6 for two different membrane elements membrane A is immobilized by filtering the enzyme solution from the support layer side while membrane B from the skin layer side. [Pg.494]

A process for the epoxidation of propene with in situ generation of H P was proposed in the 1990s by the Tosoh Corporation [23]. It was suggested that PO could be made via a direct reaction between hydrogen and oxygen in the presence of propene, using a catalyst made of Pd supported on crystalline titanium silicate, in a flow system. The solvent for the reaction was f-butanol, and the reaction temperature was 45 °C. A conversion of 0.8% was reported, with a selectivity for PO of 99%. [Pg.341]

The primary coolant circuit was wholly contained within the PCRV with the core and reflectors located in the upper part of the cavity and the steam generators and circulators located in the lower part. The helium coolant flowed downward through the reactor core and was then directed into the reheater, superheater, evaporator, and economizer sections of the 12 steam generators. From the steam generators, the helium entered the four circulators and was pumped up around the outside of the core support floor and the core barrel before entering the plenum above the core. The superheated and reheated steam was converted to electricity in a conventional steam cycle power conversion turbine-generator system. [Pg.203]
