Support paper

The position of each component of a mixture is quantified by calculating the distance traveled by the component relative to the distance traveled by the solvent. This is called relative mobility and symbolized by Rf. In Figure 3.2D, the R values for components B and C are calculated. The Rf for a substance is a constant for a certain set of experimental conditions. However, it varies with solvent, type of stationary support (paper, alumina, silica gel), temperature, humidity, and other environmental factors. R values are always reported along with solvent and temperature.

Wrap each membrane, backed with precut support paper, in Saran wrap (do not substitute with another brand), and expose to Kodak Biomax X-ray film for 24-48 h at -70°C with a Biomax MS enhancing screen. Analyze filters on a beta scanner (Instantlmager , Packard Instruments) for approx 1-2 h. 

Previously, our membranes were cast separately from the support paper, but today we usually cast the membranes on the support paper. This gives a reinforcement of the membrane, and generally it prolonges the lifetime. 

Support Paper. The selection of support paper is a very important part of the membrane development. This is often done in cooperation with the manufacturer of support paper. However, also here it must be realized that despite an extremely high growth of membrane filtration, the amount of support paper is very small compared to the usual manufacturing of paper. 

Plate-and-Frame Systems. The membrane cast on support paper is exchanged and replaced by membranes cut out in the proper size.

Appendix 8.9, in identifying how packs are becoming increasingly complex and sophisticated (e.g. to assist in product administration or as special devices), indicates the various types of additional testing which are now essential to approval. Appendix 8.10 lists support papers written by the author with reference to plastics. 

Flat sheet membranes are generally manufactured on a casting machine, which is shown schematically in Figure 1.35. A polymer solution is cast by a casting knife on a polyester or polyethylene support paper, which is continuously supplied from a roll. The cast polymer film is fed to the precipitation bath, where the actual membrane is formed. After a certain residence time in a rinse bath, where residue solvent is removed, the membrane is collected as a flat sheet on the take up roll. The membranes, which are obtained as up to 2 m wide continuous sheets, are then further processed into the desired module configuration.

The most common example of the resonance theory is the description of the benzene structure. The experimentally precisely determined and accurately known carbon-carbon bond length is consistent with the model as average of the resonance structures. When Pauling s resonance description of the benzene structure was criticized, the physicist Edward Teller and his colleagues provided spectroscopic evidence to support it [40]. The Nobel laureate physicist Philip Anderson was oblivious of Teller s and his co-workers paper (Private communication from Philip Anderson to the author by e-mail in 2009), and 68 years after Teller s contribution, in 2008, Anderson communicated another supportive paper for Pauling s model [41].
