Information systems — by virtue of expectations for improvement and the effort, time, and expense involved in their implementation — are a prominent feature in supply chain improvement. They include the user as an integral part of the supply chain control system in their research test-bed. To this end, the simulation component dynamically generates live data, such as customer orders, to the ERP and SCM components. Then, the user makes decisions about the ERP and SCM systems to manage the supply chain. The system periodically gives feedback to the user and the rest of the model. Ball et al. intend to investigate both the performance of supply chain software and human decision-making. Front end, engine and back end MPC modules are all cormected to the enterprise requirements planning (ERP) database. This enables MPC modules to be seamlessly connected to human resource management, finance and sales and marketing modules. SAP includes MPC systems as part of its supply chain software - supply chain planning, execution, collaboration and coordination. 

To solve this problem. Bell has brought in two supply chain software companies that have made proposals on systems that could cover the volume and the complexity of tasks Bell needs to have handled. These two software companies are offering different types of products, however.

In a survey conducted by PriceWaterhouseCoopers (Moore and Gonzalez, 2002), it was revealed that only 15% of the respondents were very confident in the quality of data they receive from partners. And only 37% were very confident in their own data. This lack of confidence bears testimony to the extent of data quality issue faced by companies in almost all industries. Ensuring data quality is a time consuming and costly process. Nevertheless, companies have to acknowledge that their business operations remain inefficient and true value of their installed supply chain software tools cannot be realized till data quality is ensured.
