Some incommensurate superstructures are developed from lattice distortion instead of partial ordering of cations. One example is the superconducting oxide Bi2+)tSr2Cai jtCu20g, 6 [43, 44]. [Pg.462]

Liquid crystals exhibit a partially ordered state (anisotropic) which falls in-between the completely ordered solid state and completely disordered liquid state. It is sometimes referred to as the fourth state of matter . In recent years, interest in liquid crystalline thermosets (especially liquid crystalline epoxy) has increased tremendously [33-44]. If the liquid crystal epoxy is cured in the mesophase, the liquid crystalline superstructure is fixed permanently in the polymer network, even at higher temperature. Liquid crystal epoxies are prepared using a liquid crystal monomer [33-38] or by chemical modification of epoxy resin [43] which incorporates liquid crystal unit in the epoxy structure. Liquid crystalline epoxy resins with different types of mesogen such as benzaldehyde azine [33], binaphthyl ether [34, 35], phenyl ester [36, 37] and azomethine ethers [38, 39] have been reported. Depending on the chemical nature of the mesogen, the related epoxies display a wide range of thermomechanical properties. The resins can be cured chemically with an acid or amine [40, 41] or by photochemical curing in the presence of a photo-initiator [3]. Broer and co-workers [42] demonstrated the fabrication of uniaxially oriented nematic networks from a diepoxy monomer in the presence of a photo-initiator. [Pg.176]

As an example, the joint analysis of IR and Raman spectra provided evidence of the partial ordering of cations in a Fe-Cr corundum-type mixed sesquioxides, which are used industrially as high temperature water-gas shift catalysts, but are also active in olefin oxidative dehydrogenation. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of these solids indicate the conmdum-type structure without any superstructure. This implies that iron and chromium ions are randomly distributed. IR and Raman spectra instead definitely show that cations are at least partially ordered in layers such as in the ilmenite-type superstructure. Similarly, XRD analysis shows a cubic (non-ferroelectric) structure of nanometric BaTi03, while vibrational spectroscopies reveal microscopic asymmetry of this structure. Similarly, IR spectroscopy allowed the determination of the state of vanadium in solid solution in Ti02 anatase catalysts, and the presence of Ti" + in the silicalite framework of TSl catalysts, " used for the selective oxidation of phenol and the ammoximation of cyclohexanone with hydrogen peroxide. [Pg.450]

Depending on the oxygen partial pressure and temperature, numerous cobaltite-, ferrite-, and manganite-based systems exhibit formation of these structural types, although these are not the only possible superstructures, even among the perovskite derivatives. A variety of different ordering types and corresponding structures have been described elsewhere [22-24]. [Pg.56]

The contribution of the superstructure to the transfer of loads to adjacent substructure units depends on the capacity of the connection of the superstructure to substructure and the relative stiffness of the substructure at the location of the impact. However, in order to consider partial transfer of lateral forces to the superstructure, positive steel or concrete connections of superstructure to substructure such as shear keys must be provided. Similarly, for partial transfer to the superstructure of the longitudinal component of the impact force, the shear capacity of the bearings must be adequate. When elastomeric bearings are used their longitudinal flexibility may be added to the longitudinal flexibility of the piers. If the ultimate capacity of the bearings is exceeded, then the pier must take the total longitudinal force and be treated as a cantilever. [Pg.106]
