Impact force

Atomization. A gas or Hquid may be dispersed into another Hquid by the action of shearing or turbulent impact forces that are present in the flow field. The steady-state drop si2e represents a balance between the fluid forces tending to dismpt the drop and the forces of interfacial tension tending to oppose distortion and breakup. When the flow field is laminar the abiHty to disperse is strongly affected by the ratio of viscosities of the two phases. Dispersion, in the sense of droplet formation, does not occur when the viscosity of the dispersed phase significantly exceeds that of the dispersing medium (13). 

The impact forces on car couplers put high stresses in sills, anchors, and doublers. This may start fatigue cracks in the shell, particularly at the corners of welded doubler plates. With brittle steel in cold weather, such cracks sometimes cause complete rupture of the tank. Large end radii on the doublers and tougher steels will reduce this hazard. Inspection of older cars can reveal cracks before failure. 

Because of the demands of highway service, the DOT specifications have a number of requirements in addition to the ASME Code. These include design for impact forces and rollover protection for fittings. 

Optimal hydraulics is the proper balance of hydraulic parameters (flowrate and equivalent nozzle size) that satisfy chosen criteria of optimization. Hydraulic quantities used to characterize jet bit performance include hydraulic horsepower, jet impact force, jet velocity, Reynolds number at the nozzle, generalized drilling rate or cost per foot drilled. While designing the hydraulic program the limitations due to cuttings transport in the annulus and pump performance characteristics must be included.

Another configuration, called an unbalanced design, has piston orientations that are neither in-phase nor 180° out-of-phase. In these configurations, the impact forces generated as each piston changes direction are not balanced by an equal and opposite force. As a result, the impact energy and the vibration amplitude are greatly increased.

The impeller is the part of the agitator that impacts force to the material being mixed. Propellers, turbines, gates, anchors, and paddles are all types of impellers. Typically, the impeller is a single propeller or turbine blade connected to a shaft that is driven by an electric motor at a fixed speed. There are two classes of impeller agitators axial-flow and radial-flow, and the mixing characteristics are shown in Figure 3.14.
