Enzymes may be described a organic catalysts of biological origin. The majority are obtained from the interior of cells, but some are obtained from natural secretions such as the digestive juices and milk. For a full discussion of the nature of enzymes and the mechanism of their reactions the student should consult a work such as Chemistry and Methods of Enzymes, by J. B. Sumner and G. F. Somers (Academic Press, New York), or Enzymes, by M. Dixon and E. C. Webb[(Longman Group Ltd.). The following points should however be noted ... [Pg.509]

Amaranthus Palmeri S. Wats., Palmer amaranth, is a coarse, weedy, drought-resistant, dioecious member of the Amaranthaceae and is related to A. retroflexus L., redroot pigweed, and the ornamentals k. tricolor L., sumner poinsettia, and /. caudatus L., love-lies-bleeding. Palmer amaranth was used by natives of the North American desert as a protein source and cereal to supplement maize and beans. Another member of the same family, A. spinosus L., spiny amaranth, has been reported to exhibit allelopathic activity toward coffee... [Pg.286]

Phenoxyacids (PA) have been widely used as herbicides in agriculture, forestry, and, to a lesser extent, garden activities. The principal products are represented by 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) 2,4,5-T (2,4,5-trichlo-rophenoxyacetic acid) and MCPA (4-chloro, 2-methylphenoxyacetic acid) (Stevens and Sumner, 1991). 2,4,5-T has been banned in many countries for a long time because of contamination of the commercial formulations of 2,4,5-T by 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzodioxin. At present, dioxin contamination of these formulations has been reduced to very low concentrations. [Pg.10]
