Summary of properties

The useful properties of some of the important single-phase piezoceramics are summarized in Table 6.5. The values for BaTi03 and the PZT range are taken from manufacturers data sheets where precise compositions are, of course, not revealed other values are from the literature.

Chemical Resistance Resistant to most acids. Attacked by HNO3 and HF. Attacked by the halogens. Can be heated in hydrogen to its melting point without decomposition. 

Isomorphism TiC is isomorphous with TiN and TiO. Thus oxygen and nitrogen as impurities, or as deliberate addition, can substitute for carbon to form binary and ternary solid solutions over a wide range of homogeneity. These solutions may be considered as Ti(C,N,0) mixed crystals. TiC forms solid solutions with the other monocarbides of Group IV and V. It is the host lattice for WC (see Ch. 6, Sec. 8). 

CVD diamond is a recent material and, like single-crystal diamond, it is expensive and available only in small quantities and mostly in the form of coatings. As a result, the evaluation of its properties is still limited. The

The US became interested in a pressed RDX compn for use in projectiles in the early 1940 s. In examining the 91/9 RDX/beeswax compn relative to the total quantities required, it was very evident that because of the limited availability of beeswax, a substitute for this wax would have to be found. The British also contemplated this same problem. They conducted investigations to find substitutes. The following is quoted from Ref 9 as a summary of properties of a beeswax substitute that would fulfill the British requirement. This information is reported to have been taken from Ref 118 ...
