Sulphur-containing complexes

Rapid decomposition of the sulphur-containing complex generates thiyl radical and pentacoordinate Fe + complex which reacts with the CN to give the ferrocyanide complex (equations 56 and 57). 

The efiftcient compounds in respect to hydroperoxide decomposers include nickel and sulphur—containing complexes [42]. Such substances can also act as UV absorbers and quenchers of excited states [43]. 

Multi-element analyses involving solvent extraction and high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) have also been described. The extracts, containing metal-chelate complexes with sulphur-containing reagents, such as dithizone and diethyldithiocarbamate, were used directly for determination of the metals by HPLC.14...

Relative differences between S 2p3/2 and O 1 s ionization potentials show a characteristic separation for oxygen-bound and sulphur-bound sulphoxides. It is clearly shown in Table 20 that sulphur-bound complexes have (O 1 s-S 2p3/2) relative shifts of 365.0 eV, while oxygen-bound complexes have relative shifts of 365.8 eV. Infrared and X-ray crystallographic results also show that most neutral platinum and palladium dialkyl sulphoxide complexes contain metal-sulphur rather than metal-oxygen bonds, while first-row transition metals favour oxygen-bonded sulphoxide.

The report by Basset and co-workers on the metathesis of sulphur-containing alkenes using a tungsten alkylidene complex, mentioned previously for the acyclic cross-metathesis reaction (see Sect. 2.2), also contained early examples of ring-opening cross-metathesis of functionalised alkenes [20]. Allyl methyl sulphide was reacted with norbornene in the presence of the tungsten catalyst 5, to yield the desired ring-opened diene 35 (Eq. 29). 

Recent work ( ) with model organosulphur compounds has shown that at temperatures above 350 C and pressures in excess of 100 atm (1500 psig), the hydrolytic desulphurisation reaction occurs readily with thioethers, mercaptans and other non-thio-phenic types of organosulphur compounds. Thiophene itself is more resistant to this type of reaction but desulphurisation is significant in the 450 - 500 C range. More complex fused ring sulphur containing aromatic structures, can, however, be more reactive. 

Mechanisms for metal immobilization include intracellular uptake with complexation to ligands such as sulphur-containing peptides (metallothio-neins) and carboxylic acids (citrate, malate, oxalate) (Gadd, 1993 Sarret et al., 1998, 2002 Fomina et al., 2005c). Some fungi can also precipitate...
