Eye Ointment of Sulphacetamide, B,P, Usually contains 6-0 per cent of sulphacetamide sodium. It can be assayed as the parent substance after preliminary extraction with dilute hydrochloric acid from a solution of the sample in a mixture of light petroleum and ether.

NHCOCH3. White crystals, m.p. 18l-l83"C. Soluble sulphacetamide is the sodium salt which is soluble in water. Il is prepared by acetylating sulphanilamide and hydrolysing one acetyl group. Being more soluble than most of the sulphonamides it is used in treating infections of the urinary tract and of the conjunctiva. 

This type of titration is quite simple to carry out and is very useful for the analysis of sulphonamide antibiotics and aminobenzoic acid-derived local anaesthetics. Titration is carried out with acidified sodium nitrite causing the primary aromatic amine function to be converted to a diazonium salt shown in Figure 3.15 for sulphacetamide. 

Synonyms. Soluble Sulphacetamide Sulfacetamide Sodium Sulfacylum Natrium. 

They confirmed this assignment by pulse radiolysis a similar spectrum was obtained when they pulsed an oxygen-saturated aqueous solution of sulphacetamide in the presence of 0.1 M sodium formate. Under these conditions, superoxide anion is formed in accordance with Equation 12.18, which then reacted with SA in accordance with Equation 12.20 to form the same product as in the laser flash photolysis experiment, thus illustrating that the two techniques are complementary.
