Properties Platelet-type crystalline structure. High porosity, high void volume to surface area ratio, low density, large range of particle size. Insoluble in water and organic solvents soluble in hot concentrated sulfuric acid. From 1932-35, four papers by Hackel and Urbanski appeared. The high C/H ratio for heavy fuels and their high levels of contaminants such as sulfur, water, and sediment, tend to reduce their NHV which can reach as low as 40,000 kJ/kg by comparison to the 42,500 kJ/kg for a conventional home-heating oil. HTS catalyst consists mainly of magnetite crystals stabilized using chromium oxide. Phosphoms, arsenic, and sulfur are poisons to the catalyst. Low reformer steam to carbon ratios give rise to conditions favoring the formation of iron carbides which catalyze the synthesis of hydrocarbons by the Fisher-Tropsch reaction.
