Batsanov et al. 23) reacted sulfur with PtCU and PtBr2 by heating mixtures of the reactants in evacuated, sealed ampoules. At 100 -200°C after 12-24 h, sulfide chlorides PtCljS (1.70 < x < 2 0.6 s y < 3.35) and sulfide bromides PtBr S (1.87 < x 2.06 0.84 y s 1.80) were formed. The compositions depended on the initial PtX2 S ratio, and the temperature. At 320-350°C, loss of chlorine led to the compounds PtClS (1.7 y 1.9). According to their X-ray powder patterns, all of these products retained the main structural features of the original platinum halides. From considerations of molar volumes, the authors deduced the presence of polysulfide anions. [Pg.381]

Zinc dithiocarbamates have been used for many years as antioxidants/antiabrasives in motor oils and as vulcanization accelerators in rubber. The crystal structure of bis[A, A-di- -propyldithio-carbamato]zinc shows identical coordination of the two zinc atoms by five sulfur donors in a trigonal-bipyramidal environment with a zinc-zinc distance of 3.786 A.5 5 The electrochemistry of a range of dialkylthiocarbamate zinc complexes was studied at platinum and mercury electrodes. Both compounds crystallize with the cadmium diiodide structure (space group P3ml) as previously reported on polycrystalline samples.3 For platinum disulfide, ao = 3.542(1) A and c0 = 5.043(1) A, and for platinum ditelluride, a0 = 4.023(1) A and c0 = 5.220(3) A. Direct chemical analysis for the component elements was not carried out. Instead, precision density and unit-cell determinations were performed to characterize the samples. The densities of both compounds as determined by a hydrostatic technique with heptadecafluorodeca-hydro-l-(trifluoromethyl)naphthalene as the density fluid4 indicated that they are slightly deficient in platinum. For platinum disulfide, = 7.86 g/cm3 and Pmeas = 7.7(1) gm/cm3, and for platinum ditelluride, p = 10.2 gm/cm3 and Pmeas = 9.8(1) gm/cm3. In a typical experiment an emission spectrum of the platinum disulfide showed that phosphorus was present in less than 5 ppm. A mass spectroscopic examination of the platinum ditelluride revealed a small doping by sulfur (less than 0.4%) and traces of chlorine and phosphorus (less than 100 ppm). [Pg.50]
