Sulfur cascades

Sulfonation can be conducted with naphthalene—92 wt % H2SO4 in a 1 1.1 mole ratio with staged acid addition at 160°C over 2.5 h to give a 93% yield of the desired product (20). Continuous mono sulfonation of naphthalene with 96 wt % sulfuric acid in a cascade reactor at ca 160°C gives... [Pg.491]

Pan and cascade burners are generally more limited ia flexibiHty and are useful only where low sulfur dioxide concentrations are desired. Gases from sulfur burners also contain small amounts of sulfur trioxide, hence the moisture content of the air used can be important ia achieving a corrosion-free operation. Continuous operation at temperatures above the condensation poiat of the product gases is advisable where exposure to steel (qv) surfaces is iavolved. Pressure atomiziag-spray burners, which are particularly suitable when high capacities are needed, are offered by the designers of sulfuric acid plants. [Pg.145]

Other burners are used for low capacity operations. A cascade or checker burner, ia which molten sulfur flows down through brick checkerwork countercurrent to a flow of air, is used ia small units with a sulfur trioxide converter to condition gases entering electrostatic precipitators at boiler plants operating on low sulfur coal. A small pan burner, which is fed with soHd, low carbon sulfur, is used to produce sulfur dioxide for solution ia irrigation water to control the pH and maintain porosity ia the soil. The same type of burner is used to disiafect wastewater ia this case sulfur dioxide is used iastead of chlorine. [Pg.145]

Metal-sulfur clusters probably constitute the best known class of clusters due to their considerable importance and common occurrence in the biological world, where they fulfil the role of electron carriers (see Chapter 12). This function is related to their high capacity to undergo a cascade of reversible redox processes. As an illustrative and introductive example, Figure 1 shows the redox ability of [Fe4(/r3-S)40/-C5H5)4].la... [Pg.409]

The various, complex, cascade reactions described above converted simple saturated and aromatic heterocycles into polycyclic pentathiepins and their chlorinated and rearranged derivatives this strikingly illustrates the extensive reactivity of S2CI2 and its complexes with bases, particularly DABCO. This reactivity encompassed dehydrogenation of tetrahydroaromatics, chlorination and sulfuration of aromatics and their conversion into SSCl derivatives. [Pg.218]

Ring closure to an episulfide is a feasible reaction for thiocarbonyl ylides. In most cases, the sulfur is further extruded under the reaction conditions to afford an olefin as the final product. This cascade transformation has been utilized by Danishefsky and co-workers in their total synthesis of ( )-indolizomycin (Scheme 16)." In the Danishefsky s approach, diazo ketone 137 is treated with a catalytic amount of Rh2(OAc)4 to generate thiocarbonyl ylide 138, which cyclizes to give episulfide 139. This episulfide isomerizes to mercaptan 140, which is then desulfurized by partially deactivated W-2 Raney nickel. [Pg.167]

The fatty acid-like leukotrienes derived from the addition of glutathione to products of the lipoxygenase branch of the arachidonic cascade are closely associated with manifestations of asthma. Many compounds designed to antagonize leukotrienes at the receptor level incorporate long alkyl chains to mimic the leukotrienes backbone in addition to the sulfur-containing moieties that stand in for glutathione. The reaction... [Pg.81]

Clusius and Dickel used a column 36 m long to make 99+% pure isotopes of chlorine in HCl. The cascade of Figure 19.15 has a total length of 14 m most of the annular diameter is 25.4 mm, and the annular widths range from 0.18 to 0.3 mm. The cascade is used to recover the heavy isotope of sulfur in carbon disulfide a production rate of a 90% concentrate of the heavy isotope of 0.3 g/day was achieved. [Pg.644]

Figure 19.15. The liquid thermal diffusion system for the recovery of heavy sulfur isotope in carbon disulfide. The conditions prevailing at the time after 90% 34S is reached. Each rectangle in the cascades represents a column, each height being proportional to the length of the column. The two cascades have a combined height of 14 m, annular dia 25.4 mm, and annular width 0.18-0.3 mm. Production rate of 90% concentrate of 34S was 0.3 g/day [IV. M. Rutherford, Ind. Eng. Chem. Proc. Des. Dev. 17, 17-81 (1978)]. Figure 19.15. The liquid thermal diffusion system for the recovery of heavy sulfur isotope in carbon disulfide. Sulfuric acid alkylation also is used. In addition to the type of acid catalyst used, the processes differ in the way of producing the emulsion, increasing the interfacial surface for the reaction. There also are important differences in the manner in which the heat of reaction is removed. Often, a refrigerated cascade reactor is used. In other designs, a portion of the reactor effluent is vaporized by pressure reduction to provide cooling for the reactor. [Pg.55]

Methanol-0-4 methyl nitrite, and dimethyl disulfide have been examined as potential chemical probes for distinguishing between alkoxides and enolates in the gas phase.171 Methanol-0-d proved to be unsuitable and methyl nitrite reacts too slowly in contrast, the reactive ambident behaviour of dimethyl disulfide results in elimination across the C—S bond on reaction with alkoxides ( hard bases ) and attack at sulfur by enolates ( soft bases ). This probe has been applied to investigation of the anionic oxy-Cope rearrangement. The dianionic oxy-Cope rearrangement is a key step in a squarate ester cascade involving stereoinduced introduction of two alkenyllithium reagents cis to each other.172... [Pg.352]

The sulfuric acid process was developed by several companies and is available for licensing by these companies. The first sulfuric acid units were of the jet design with time tanks equipped with baffles for reactors. The M. W. Kellogg Company developments in the sulfuric acid process include the cascade reactor, which uses autorefrigeration. [Pg.188]

The sulfoxidation of benzene (Table 4, entry 38) yields benzenesulfonic acids and the respective derivatives. The electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction gives high yields and aqueous sulfuric acid or oleum is used for the sulfonation reaction, which is performed in cascades of reactor vessels. [Pg.24]

A radical cyclization controlled by sulfur yields the tetrahydroisoquinoline (Equation 49) <1997J(P1)2291>. In the absence of the sulfur groups, only the reduced product is isolated. Further reactions that utilize radical cyclizations with vinylsulfides show a cascade reaction eventually forming the benzo[ ]quinolizine system <1999TL1149> (Equation 50). [Pg.233]
