Blue fire

Arsenic sulfide occurs in nature as the mineral realgar. It is used as a pigment in pyrotechnics to produce blue fire in dyeing and calico printing and as a depilatory for hides. 

Blue fire for cascades meal powder 16 parts, saltpeter 8, sulfur 12, and zinc filings 12 parts. 

According to Ellern (Ref 3, p 135) the sulfide ( ... red orpiment.. ) is included in a marine handlight pyrot compn called .. . ships blue lights... along with K nitrate and S. Generally, either a blue fire or an intense white flame results from incorporation of the disulfide into pyrots (Ref 5)... 

Blue Fire.—Potassium nitrate 500 parts, barium carbonate 300 parts, aluminium powder 200 parts, amorphous phosphorus 5 parts. 

Bird s Blue fire. 1 part charcoal, 1 part orpiment (yellow sulphuret of arsenic), 16 parts black sulphuret of antimony, 48 parts nitre, and 64 parts sulphur. 

Blue Fire for Stage Effect, 15 parts of sulphur, 15 parts sulphate of po-taesa, 15 parts ammonia-sulphate of copper, 27 ports mtre, and 28 parts chlorate of potassa. The bine is ruado darker or lighter by Increasing or diminishing tho potassa and copper ingredients. This is Marchand s preparation. 

Karsh s Blue Fire. Mix 7 parts sulphate of copper, 24 sulphur, and 69 parts chlorate of potassa.

Blue Fire. I. Eighteen parts of chlorate of potassium, 24 of saltpetre, 14 of sulphur, 6 of cupric oxide. 

Pale-blue Fire. I Mix 61 parts of powdered chlorate of potassium, 16 of ulverized sulphur, and 25 of strongly eated and pulverized alum. 

Blue Fire with a Bluish-green Flame. Rub fine and mix 12 parts of nitrate of barium, 5 of chlorate of potassium, and 4 of sulphur. 

Blue Fire Mix 2 parts realgar (red arsenic), 3 parts chorco, 5 porta chlorate if potaasa, 13 parts sulphur, and 77 parts lutirate of baryta. 

USE As pigment in painting in fireworks as blue fire and to give an intense white flame manuf shot calico printing and dyeing tanning and depilating hides.

During a sulfur plant outage, quantities of SO2 may be observed emanating from open manways. Also, a blue fire can sometimes be seen in cold process vessels and lines. Pyrophoric iron is the cause of these phenomena. When dry, it spontaneously ignites after exposure to air. The heat evolved from pyrophoric iron combustion in catalyst beds can lead to high reactor temperatures. Also, irritating SO2 vapors interfere with maintenance personnel working to repair the unit.
