Zinc dithiocarbamates have been used for many years as antioxidants/antiabrasives in motor oils and as vulcanization accelerators in rubber. The crystal structure of bis[A, A-di- -propyldithio-carbamato]zinc shows identical coordination of the two zinc atoms by five sulfur donors in a trigonal-bipyramidal environment with a zinc-zinc distance of 3.786 A.5 5 The electrochemistry of a range of dialkylthiocarbamate zinc complexes was studied at platinum and mercury electrodes. An exchange reaction was observed with mercury of the electrode.556 Different structural types have been identified by variation of the nitrogen donor in the pyridine and N,N,N, N -tetra-methylenediamine adducts of bis[7V,7V-di- .vo-propyldithiocarbamato]zinc. The pyridine shows a 1 1 complex and the TMEDA gives an unusual bridging coordination mode.557 The anionic complexes of zinc tris( V, V-dialkyldithiocarbamates) can be synthesized and have been spectroscopically characterized.558... [Pg.1196]

Oae and co-workers (288) were the first to show that nucleophilic displacement at sulfur is accompanied by retention of configuration. They found that chiral 0-labeled alkyl aryl sulfoxides exchange oxygen with dimethylsulfoxide at about 150°C, almost without racemization. To explain the steric course (retention) of this reaction, the formation of a trigonal-bipyramidal intermediate 246 was postulated in which the entering and departing oxygen atoms occupy apical and equatorial positions, respectively. [Pg.427]

The reaction temperatures and some of the activation energies cited above seem to be too low to support a radical-chain reaction mechanism. Guryanova found that exchange of radioactive elemental sulfur with the p sulfur atoms of bis-p-tolyl tetrasulfide proceeds at 80-130 °C with an activation energy of only 50 kJ/mol in the case of the corresponding trisulfide the activation energy was determined as 60 kJ/mol. These data sharply contrast with the observation that liquid sulfur has to be heated to more than 170 °C to detect free radicals by electron spin resonance spectroscopy and the activation energy for homolytic SS bond scission has been determined as 150 kJ/mol (see above). [Pg.172]

Whereas the phosphetanium (Sect. 2.2) derivatives undergo base-catalyzed hydrolysis with essentially complete retention of configuration, the reaction with the related thietanium salts proceeds with complete inversion of configuration and can be described simply as a direct nucleophilic substitution 35. As far as the author is aware, no exchange evidence of the type er countered in the acid-catalyzed hydrolysis of ethylene phosphate, has been found for the cyclic sulfate esters. Consequently despite the geometrical similarities between the cyclic sulfates and phosphates and the related hybridization of the central atoms, the situation in which a finite pentacovalent intermediate sulfur species exists has not been delineated (restricting the discussion to esters). [Pg.46]
