Consideration of these facts naturally led to plans to use saccharified wood waste and sulfite liquor as sources of fermentable sugar. Large potential supplies of these were available, and the economic factors which affect their use in peacetime did not enter into the picture as serious deterrents in the emergency. Faith and Hall (41) summarize the wood hydrolysis process of Scholler as modified by work in the United States. 

Although the hydrolysis of wood to produce simple sugars has not proved to be economically feasible, by-product sugars from sulfite pulping are used to produce ethanol and to feed yeast (107). Furthermore, a hemiceUulose molasses, obtained as a by-product in hardboard manufacture, can be used in catde feeds instead of blackstrap molasses (108). Furfural can be produced from a variety of wood processing byproducts, such as spent sulfite Hquor, bquors from the prehydrolysis of wood for kraft pulping, hardboard plants, and hardwood wastes (109). 

In principle, the same carbohydrates and their degradation products formed after hydrolysis of wood can be recovered from sulfite spent liquors. However, this requires complicated and expensive separation techniques. The industrial use of sulfite spent liquor components is mainly limited to fermentation processes. The most common product is ethyl alcohol which is produced from hexose sugars by yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisae) and separated from the mixture by distillation. Even the carbon dioxide formed in the process can be recovered. Other fermentation products, including acetone, n-butanol, and lactic acid, can be produced by certain microorganisms. Because some contaminants, for example, sulfur dioxide, inhibit the growth of the yeast, they must be removed from the liquor prior to the fermentation.
