SULFINYL AZIDES

Sulfinyl azides have higher thermal stability than their divalent counterparts. For example, benzenesulfmyl azides ArS(0)N3 (Ar = Ph, 4-MeCelFt, 4-NO2C6H4), which are obtained by the metathetical reaction of the sulfinyl chloride and sodium azide in acetonitrile, can be stored in the solid state at low temperatures. ... [Pg.202]

SOME UNUSUAL SULFINYL DERIVATIVES AND THEIR BEHAVIOR Reaction of a number of the nucleophiles in Table 6 with a sulfinyl sulfone (139) leads to substitution products ArS(0)Nu that are known from other studies to exhibit interesting and unusual chemical behavior of their own. These same sulfinyl derivatives can also be generated by reaction of the nucleophile with a sulfinyl chloride (142). Let us now discuss what is known about such compounds as sulfinyl azides, ArS(0)N3, sulfinyl hydrazides, ArS(0)NHNH2, etc. [Pg.120]

Aryl sulfinyl azides, ArS(0)N3, can be prepared at low temperature by reaction of sulfinyl chloride ArS(0)Cl with sodium azide (Maricich and Hoffman, 1974). On warming to 0° they decompose with evolution of nitrogen, their decomposition exhibiting clean first-order kinetics ( = 3 x 10-4 s-1 for PhS(0)N3 in acetonitrile at 0°). The rate-determining step of the decomposition is loss of nitrogen from the sulfinyl azide to form the sulfinyl nitrene ArS(0)N (143). The subsequent behavior of this nitrene suggests (Maricich and... [Pg.120]

Maricich, T. J. et al., J. Amer. Chem. Soc., 1974, 96, 7771, 7776 Benzene-, p-nitrobenzene-, and p-toluene-sulfinyl azides are thermally unstable, decomposing explosively when warmed alone or as cone, solutions. They may be prepared safely and handled as solutions at —20°C or below. The isolated solids may be stored at —80°C, but benzenesulfinyl azide explodes at 11°C, and p-toluenesul-finyl azide at 8°C.
