Sulfide gold production

Montana. These deposits consist of stibnite and other sulfide minerals containing base metals and silver or gold. Ores of the complex deposits are mined primarily for lead, copper, 2inc, or precious metals antimony is a by-product of the treatment of these ores.

Native copper ore is crushed, concentrated by washing with water, smelted, and cast into bars. Oxide and carbonate ores are treated with carhon in a smeller. Sulfide ore treatment is complex, hut. in brief, consists of smelling to a matte of cuprous sulfide, ferrous sulfide, and silica, which molten matte is treated in a converter by the addition of lime and air is forced under pressure through the mass. The products are blister copper, ferrous calcium silicate slag, and SO . Refining is conducted by electrolysis, and the anode mud is treated to obtain the gold and silver. See Fig. I. 

Tin(IV) sulfide can be prepared by hydrogen sulfide precipitation of Sn(IV) from solution, to produce a microcrystalline material that is contaminated with oxide. Mosaic gold is a crystalline form of tin(IV) sulfide prepared by high-tempera-ture sublimation procedures. Mosaic gold is the reported product of heating mixtures of (1) tin and sulfur (2) tin, sulfur, and ammonium chloride (3) tin, sulfur, mercury, and ammonium chloride 9 (4) tin(II) oxide, sulfur, and ammonium chloride 9 (5) tin(II) chloride and sulfur 9 (6) tin(II) sulfide, tin(II) chloride, and sulfur.9... 

This produces a brown end product which is highly insoluble in alcohol and other organic solvents. Oxidation of DAB also causes polymerization, resulting in the ability to react with osmium tetroxide, and thus increasing its staining intensity and electron density. Of the several metals and methods used to intensify the optical density of polymerized DAB, gold chloride in combination with silver sulfide appears to be the most successful (6). DAB has been classified as a potential carcinogen and therefore should be handled and disposed of with appropriate care.
