Method. The coating of the stationary phase on the support material is carried out in situ as described above in order to achieve a loading of 27% w/w. The stationary phase consists of 0.1 M tetrabutylammonium hydrogen sulfate in borate buffer (pH 9.2). The mobile phase is butanol-hexane (1 3). The HPLC separation of 12 sulfa drugs with the system described is shown in Fig.4.24. The distribution ratios of some drugs are listed in Table 4.8. The limits of detection range from ca. 10 to 100 ng per injection. 

Silica gel plates are modified to form a reversed-phase sorbent by being impregnated with liquid paraffin, silicone oil, or fats. Reversed-phase plates of this type are used in the identification of steroid hormones [8,9]. Table 3.2 lists various other substances that have been used for impregnation [10,11]. Sorbents that are impregnated with amminium oxalate, ammonium sulfate, magnesium acetate, sodium acetate, and silver nitrate have one time or the other been commerically available. As an example, impregnated adsorbents have been used for the resolution of sulfa drugs [19]. 

A burst of synthetic activity in this area ensued. By 1947, over 5000 sulfanilamides were synthesized and tested as medicinal drugs against a number of diseases. As a result of this wide screening, more than 100 candidates possessing the desired biological activity were selected. Less than a dozen from this list turned out to have the set of additional properties required for the drug. They were widely used over the next several decades. Some, for example the sulfa drugs 39-42, are still used today. 

There are many other examples. A study on allergic reactions to sulfa-based dmgs lists 38 sulfonamide nonantibiotic drugs. Based on the rich history of heterocycles in medicine, it is not surprising that sulfonamides dominate to this day.
