Although supervisors should encourage the use of oral reporting, this system will not guarantee safety and health concerns and hazard tracking or follow up, nor will it identify trends or patterns. 

The most frequently used type of written reporting system is a suggestion program that empowers employees to provide written safety and health suggestions for review and potential incorporation into an employee safety and health program.

Many companies have suggestion programs where workers receive rewards for suggestions that are implemented. It is no secret to anyone that the person who often has the best ideas on how to decrease or remove a hazard is the one who faces that hazard as part of doing normal work. Involve those who are impacted most in decision-making processes that affect their work is a sound management process. 

If a suggestion program is used, the leadership team should ensure that collection points, both hardcopy and digital are checked frequendy with suggestion comments reviewed and feedback provided to employees in a timely manner.
